Our focus turns us to our heroes at their meeting, in the early hours of the morning. Here, they devised, discussed and determined their plan of attack upon the Lords and Ladies of Twilight. And after some revisions, once new information was brought into light by none other than the Marshall of Amber, Constantine, it seemed a perfect plan.
Until the night was pierced by the manual sounding of Amber’s alarms.
Immediately, our dashing heroes and heroines leaped to arms, making a quick exit off their moonlit balcony. The sounds of battle echoed through the still midnight air, their locations a source of varying concern among Amber’s remaining children of the third generation. To the basement, or to the Royal quarters?
Splitting of their own accord and desires, each party rushed headlong into the defense of their home, and simultaneous battles ensued.
In the Royal quarters, Constantine, Quinn, and Jocelyn rushed to find the bodies of guards littering the hallway in front of the King’s chambers, all dried and withered. A mist hung heavy before the doorway, menacing the few guards that remained to boldly guard their King. It was soon learned that within the mist were life-leeching faerie creatures, whose touch burned and drained the life from a man.
With some sort of faerie magic of her own, Jocelyn distracted the beasts that remained, drawing their attention solely to her, and clearly illuminating them in the process. This left the door free for Constantine to dash inside to try and rescue the crown Princess, and Quinn to help dispatch the distracted creatures.
Upon entering the King’s chambers, the trio discovered a gruesome scene. Constantine found the Queen, Vialle, unconscious and bleeding in the Royal Nursery, amongst a collection of dead Furbolgs. And the Crown Princess, newly born Celeste, was missing. And Jocelyn and Quinn found Random clutching the Jewel of Judgement, frozen.
After prying the Jewel from Random’s grasp, they eased the man into a nearby seat while the remaining servants tended to his wounds. However, the Jewel had taken its toll, and Random’s breathing stopped, where Jocelyn, having been charged with keeping the Jewel, contacted her Uncle Corwin.
Using the Jewel to save Random’s life, Corwin appointed Constantine as the man in charge until Random was at full health once again, and charged Jocelyn as caretaker of the Jewel until it was safe to return to Random’s hands.
Meanwhile, in the depths of Amber’s dungeons, another great battle raged, which Orion and Pilgrim came upon at great speeds. Orion deemed it of great import to aid his uncles Julian and Gerard, who bravely fought with two members of the Twilight force. Pilgrim deemed it of great import to get to their Twilight captive before her rescuers did. The fight was a grisly one, Gerard being run completely through by the woman later found to be named Morrigan, and Julian taking a life-threatening lunge into his liver by the man named Lughasanda.
Orion fought bravely in the defense of his uncles, buying Pilgrim time to strengthen his position in ‘bargaining’ that was to come. Gaining a terrible wound, which severed the muscles in his arm, Orion fell back, and let the Knights of the Unicorn attempt their part. At which time, Pilgrim’s voice rang out, clear and cold throughout the dungeons.
His threat to kill their captive bore weight, and Lughasanda approached with a haughty attitude — perhaps even a superiority complex. But he underestimated the strength of the Children of Amber. Some may have been easy to capture, but those that remained free, remained so for good reason.
Trumped out, by a timely intervention on Orion’s part, Pilgrim formulated a dangerous plan in a moment’s notice, but one that ultimately proved successful. With the aid of Martin and the soldiers of Amber, they enacted a pincer plan. With Constantine and Quinn at his side, the trio weaved their way into a secret passage, and cam out behind Morrigan and Lugh. And with a well-timed shot, Pilgrim fell upon Lugh in a show of strength and stubbornness befitting of a true Amberite. Alas, Morrigan escaped their clutches, after dealing a devastating wound to Quinn, and being forced into fleeing.
The night reaches its end, now, and dawn comes to find Amber in disarray. With the king and queen temporarily out of commission, the crown princess — and many others — kidnapped, many of its royal children bedridden with horrible wounds, and its armed force significantly diminished, what will become of Amber?
That is, of course, up to our intrepid heroes, in the next chapter of Scions.
